& Carol Keppy Foundation The Keppy's, who farmed and raised
hogs along the Osco slab for decades, were a every generous couple toward youth,
according to Jay Ingram, Keppy Foundation Trustee and a Geneseo graduate who is
a senior vice president with Robert W. Baird & Co., Inc., of Davenport. Carol
Keppy died in 2000 while Wilbert Keppy deceased three years earlier. Ingram
explained while the couple never had any children of their own, they helped young
people from all over the county, especially those in the pork producing business.
Among those people they aided was Dick Baum, who farms in the area still today. The
Keppy's were instrumental in starting the Henry County Pork Producers and were
among a group of pork producers throughout the state that started the Illinois
Pork Producers in the early 1960s. "Farmers were having a tough time
during those years," said Dick Baum, Foundation Trustee. Wilbert found 90
farmers who were willing to put up $100 each to help promote pork and make a better
life for hog farmers," said Ingram. The Wilbert Keppy Foundation annually
provides scholarships for students in the area. Ingram described Mr. Keppy as
a "very hard working man who was very proud of his crop production as well
as the quality of hogs he could raise." Ingram called Keppy, who stood
6-6, a "very humble man," but said he helped a lot of people through
the years. Carol Keppy was described as an "avid reader" who loved
antiques and had a zest for life. She was instrumental in helping her husband
in the pork producing business and organizations that helped promote the product.
She helped form the Illinois Porkettes, the forerunner of the Illinois Pork Producers
Auxiliary and also was a leader in the Henry County Republican Woman. Ingram
said the Keppy's would host parties featuring only the finest pork dishes and
called Carol Keppy "a fabulous cook." Baum said the couple promoted
pork night and day and noted they were famous in Henry County for bringing some
of the finest speakers money could buy for the annual Henry County Pork producers
Banquet, which would attract as many as 500 to the Deck Plaza. It was like
a big reunion among pork producers, said Baum, noting farmers came from even neighboring
counties for the annual event. "Over the years, they felt it was very important
their legacy was to aid the development of young people in particular sons and
daughters of pork producers, "Ingram said. Ingram said Keppy was sensational
at critiquing hogs and said many people had a lot of respect for Wilbert and his
knowledge of pork. -Geneseo Republic <TO
